Russia Stands Firm Against Stronger Iran Sanctions

Dmitry MedvedevAs Russia and the U.S. negotiate an arms reduction deal, it looks like Russia will get the better end of the deal. One gets the feeling that President Barack Obama will renege on our agreements to build missile defense shields in Poland and the Czech Republic and reduce our nuclear stockpiles. Why? Obama will renege on if Russia agrees to help the U.S. stop Iran’s nuclear program and issue stronger sanctions against the rogue state if it continues.

So far, Russia has refused. The former Soviet Union will not take stronger action against Iran in return for a deal with the U.S. (Source)

An unnamed foreign ministry source said, “There are no reasons to link these issues or count on Russia being more cooperative in toughening sanctions against Iran if there is progress in talks with the United States on further cuts in strategic offensive weapons.”

Gary Samore, special assistant for arms control, believes Russia will cooperate with us on Iran, even though the country said no deal. Wishful thinking is not the best way to run negotiations, but Obama seems more interested in diplomacy than his duty to protect.
