Ballistic Missile Defense Organization

Why Hasn't More Been Accomplished by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization in Charge?
The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization responsible for the design, development, and deployment of new missile defense technologies is the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). The force crippling the MDA from proceeding with critical new space-based missile defense systems and others is Congress. For years after Reagan's vision for missile defense was revealed, some in Congress have made every effort possible to shut down missile defense efforts, claiming everything from "there is no need for it" to "the technology is unproven."

The facts about the ballistic missile defense organization's efforts are that they are more needed now than ever before. The United States and Russia are no longer the only powers in the world that have nuclear weapons. There are over 20 countries with nuclear weapons capabilities. Every day the threat increases as some of these countries, and others trying to get nuclear weapons, are hostile to the U.S. and its allies. The threat of even an accidental launch is ominous. Ballistic missile defense systems have to be in place to prevent the disaster of a nuclear detonation.

The second issue is in the misunderstanding some members of Congress have about missile defense technology. It is not unproven. During the first Gulf War, the Patriot Missile system saved thousands of lives by destroying incoming missiles. Since then, the U.S. military has been able to refine their ballistic missile defense systems to effectively eliminate intercontinental ballistic missile threats by deploying ground and sea-based defenses. However, more development is needed, and more systems put in place to protect the U.S. from all ballistic missile threats. Space-based systems need to be employed to effectively eliminate the nuclear threats to the U.S.
