The blast, the heat, the radiation, the fallout, the fires-these are all killers associated with the detonation of a nuclear weapon and some of the nuclear bomb damage that would occur. But equally devastating-in some ways even more so-in terms of nuclear bomb damage, is the powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP) generated in such an explosion.
Especially if generated high overhead-as the Iranian are known to be experimenting-this pulse would completely wipe out all electronic equipment within range and would disrupt telecommunications, banking and finance, fuel and energy, food and water supplies, emergency and government services for miles around. The cascading effects can hardly be overstated. Once power grids and computer networks start going down in one location, a powerful ripple effect can take down other systems with it.
Obviously, such a scenario would leave America frighteningly vulnerable. But as of yet, we have virtually no defense against such nuclear bomb damage. While the need for an anti-ballistic missile defense system is greater than ever, Congress has done nothing beyond a study and some hearings. Perhaps these representatives should try going without electricity for one day-or at least their Blackberries-to appreciate the problem.
Leaders also would be wise to heed the advice of one expert who recommends taking three critical actions: Immediately building a Strategic Defense Initiative-type missile defense. Developing a national recovery plan to address nuclear bomb damage and the effects from an EMP attack. Undertaking major research on the effects and possible countermeasures from such attack. Urgency is critical-taking action as if there's no tomorrow.
